Punjab government employees, mainly departmental employees, on Wednesday (September 9, 2026) called off their strike following an assurance from the chief secretary that disciplinary notices against them would be withdrawn.

The employees, who observed a day-long strike on Tuesday, demanded that the government withdraw its letter terming their August 27 mass leisure leave taken in protest as “unauthorized leave”.

The employees were on strike on a call by the Sanjha Mulazam Manch, Punjab, an organization representing employees of the Chandigarh and Mohali directorates as well as all government offices across the state. They declared that if their demand was not accepted, they would continue their strike until September 11. The state government even decided to implement “no work, no pay” in an attempt to quell the protest.

A meeting of mancha representatives and KAP general secretary Sinha was held here on Wednesday.

“We have been assured that the notifications will be withdrawn and ‘no work, no pay’ will also be imposed,” group leader Sushil Kumar Fauji told The Hindu.

The dispute between the employees and the government began on August 27, when more than three million government employees went on a nationwide strike for their demands, which include restoration of the old pension system, release of the pending 18% dearness allowance and regularization of contractual employees, among others. A meeting between Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and representatives of labor organizations was called off after Mr Mann insisted that talks could only take place after the strike was called off.

“We have also been assured that the meeting with the Chief Minister will soon be resolved regarding our other demands,” Mr. Kumar said.
