Imran Tahir rewrites T20 history with a record five-wicket haul in the 47th over

Imran Tahir has found yet another way to remind the T20 world that age hasn’t dulled his appetite for wickets too much. The 47-year-old South African produced a sensational spell for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League to become the oldest player to take five wickets in men’s T20 cricket.

Tahir finished with 5/17 as Saint Lucia Kings were bowled out for 119, turning the game around after the visitors got off to a flying start. Kamil Pooran put the Kings in a strong position during the Power Play, but the innings quickly fell apart once Tahir and Mehidy Hasan Miraz started operating in tandem.

The veteran struck twice in his first two overs, removing Pooran and Roston Chase before coming back to clear the tail. McKenny Clarke and Matthew Forde were bowled in the same game, while Joshua Bishop became his fifth victim after being trapped lbw. Tahir then completed a memorable night by taking a catch to end the Kings’ innings.

The record was previously held by Cook Islands spinner Tomakanute Ritawa, who took 5/19 against Fiji at 46 years and 299 days in 2022. Tahir had already moved into second place last year after taking 5/21 against the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons at 46 years and 148 days. Now, at 47 years and 167 days, he has pushed the benchmark even further.

Tahir’s latest five-wicket haul is his sixth in T20 cricket and fourth after completing his 40s. He now occupies three places among the five oldest five-wicket hauls in men’s T20 history, which only underlines how extraordinary his longevity has been.

The record was the standout moment of the match which Guyana won by four wickets. After restricting Saint Lucia to 119, the Warriors reached 122/6 in 18.3 overs, with Quentin Sampson’s unbeaten 37 off 11 balls providing a late push to seal the chase and send Guyana back to the top of the CPL standings.
