A man held for cutting a sandalwood tree in Tirupattur

The Tirupattur Taluk police arrested a 42-year-old man for cutting down a sandalwood tree on the fortification of a temple tank at Puthagaram village near Tirupattur town on Sunday.

The arrested person has been identified as K. Thangaraj, a resident of Jamunamarathur village atop Jawadhu Hills. Initial investigation revealed that it was around seven in the morning when several devotees noticed three persons, including Thangaraj, cutting down a sandalwood tree about 10 feet tall to fence the tank.

When the devotees raised the alarm, other devotees and residents rushed to the tank. They managed to nab the suspect Thangaraj while the other two fled the spot. After being informed, Tirupattur Taluk police and forest officials inspected the spot. A case has been registered. Police analyzed CCTV cameras en route to nabbing the fleeing suspects. A probe is underway.
