GVMC chief calls for green Ganesh celebrations

Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Ketan Garg has urged citizens to install Ganesh idols made of natural clay and avoid idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP), chemical paints and other materials that can harm the environment.

In a report on Tuesday, Mr. Garg advised pandal organizers to shun single-use plastics and other banned plastic items for pandal decorations and instead opt for eco-friendly alternatives. He said, “Organizers should set up Ganesh pandals only after obtaining necessary permissions from the concerned departments.” They should ensure cleanliness in and around the pandals every day and separate the wet and dry waste before handing over to the sanitation staff of GVMC.

Flowers, puja materials, food waste and other garbage should not be thrown on roads, drains or public places, he said.

After the celebration, the organizers should immediately remove the pandals and decorative materials and ensure that the premises are brought to a clean condition.
