BJP seeks Governor’s intervention on toll arrears

The Telangana BJP on Tuesday sought Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla’s intervention to ensure that the Congress government clears the ₹15,000 crore dues payment backlog and is holding a dedicated debate on the matter in the Legislative Assembly during the ongoing session.

A delegation led by BJP state president N. Ramchander Rao met the governor at the Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum highlighting what it described as the government’s failure to address the crisis affecting thousands of students. The party also warned of intensifying its agitation if the government did not act.

Speaking to reporters later, Mr. Rao claimed that around 40 million students were affected by fee arrears accumulated both from the previous BRS regime and the current Congress government. He said students continue to face uncertainty despite the government recently releasing limited funds for those admitted in the current academic year.

Any funds were released only after repeated interventions by the Supreme Court and persistent protests by the BJP. However, long-standing arrears remain outstanding, causing hardship to students and educational institutions.

The BJP leader slammed Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who also holds the education portfolio, accusing him of allowing the education sector to fall into crisis. He further demanded immediate withdrawal of what he called “false and illegal” cases registered against BJP workers during the recent protests.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar criticized the behavior of political parties in the Assembly, claiming that people were “disgusted” by the actions and language used by the legislators.

He accused BRS leaders of using inappropriate language against the speaker and demanded immediate action against BRS MLC Tata Madhu. Describing the incident as reprehensible, Mr. Sanjay alleged that valuable assembly time was being wasted on political war of words instead of addressing pressing public issues.

He said issues like restrictions on Section 22A land, levy charges, shortage of drinking water, unemployment, non-payment of care allowance (DA) and pension benefits deserve priority consideration in the legislature.
