Congress condemns killing of Manipuri music teacher in Delhi

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday (September 8, 2026) condemned the killing of Manipuri music teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh in Delhi and expressed concern over the safety of people from the Northeast in the national capital.

Mr Kharge said the “merciless lynching” of Singh by the mob was a “chilling reminder” of alleged lawlessness under the BJP government. He said students, women, Dalits, Adivasis and minorities remain vulnerable while people from the Northeast continue to face discrimination.

“Under HM Amit Shah’s watch, Delhi has become a crime capital, with the NCRB recording the highest level of crime in the nation’s capital year after year,” Mr Kharge said in a post on X. He offered his condolences to Singh’s family and demanded that those responsible face the “sternest action”.

He also accused the Center of making the people of Manipur suffer inside and outside the state.

Mr Gandhi said in a Facebook post that Singh went downstairs to ask a group of men to reduce the noise outside his house and was beaten to death. “A father, killed outside his home, in the capital of his country,” he said.

Mr. Gandhi said the killing raised questions about the safety of people from the northeast living in Delhi. “After many such incidents, every northeast family in Delhi today is asking the same question – are we safe here?” he said.

Questioning the functioning of the Union Home Ministry and the Delhi Police, Mr Gandhi asked what they were doing to prevent what he described as “growing lawlessness”, especially against people from the North-East.

Expressing his condolences to Singh’s family, he called for a speedy investigation and said those responsible must be brought to justice.
