e-KYC deadline for LPG users extended to September 14

The deadline for domestic cooking gas consumers to complete Aadhaar-based biometric authentication, or e-KYC, of their Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections has been extended yet again, this time to September 14.
A senior official of one of the three oil marketing companies (OMCs) confirmed the one-week extension and said about 88% of Telangana’s 1.26 lakh crore LPG consumers have completed the process, ensuring uninterrupted access to refills at domestic rates.
For the remaining users, the speed of cylinder delivery if they do not complete e-KYC remains unclear as the government is yet to decide. The repeated extension of deadlines indicates that we continue to focus on achieving maximum compliance with the e-KYC Directive.
However, oil industry sources said the e-KYC initiative, which is meant to ensure that refills reach only those intended, is unlikely to achieve 100% coverage. Many of those not yet compliant are believed to either have multiple connections in their name or use connections registered in someone else’s name.
The pace of improvement in terms of the remaining consumers coming in is slow, the official said. A week ago, the compliance level in the state was at 86%. The deadline has been extended several times in recent weeks, from August 23 to August 31 and then to September 7.
Meanwhile, in a separate development unrelated to the e-KYC exercise, the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Monday advised OMCs to reduce the 45-day waiting period for consumers in rural areas to book a top-up to 25 days, bringing it in line with the norm prevailing in urban areas.
The gap between the two reserves was introduced at the height of the West Asian crisis as a demand management measure. The revision follows the current LPG supply situation and a significant reduction in the backlog of refills compared to when the measure was introduced, the OMC said in a statement.
