Shubman Gill goes 6, 4, 6 against Abhishek Sharma, but the Indian star gets his revenge

Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma share dressing rooms, opened together for India and grew up in the same Punjab cricket system. However, on Monday, the two long-time teammates found themselves on opposite sides as Fazilka Falcons took on Amritsar Soormas in the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League in Mohali.

Gill had the better of the early exchange as he took on Abhishek as the left-arm spinner returned in the 10th over. Captain Fazilka hit the first ball straight down the ground for a six, followed it up with a four over deep mid-wicket before clearing the ropes again off the fifth delivery.

It was a sequence of 6, 4, 6 that brought Gill close to a commanding half-century, but Abhishek had to reply on the last ball of the over. Gill went for another big hit and picked out Naman Dhir, who went for a 35-ball 67 that featured eight fours and three sixes. Fazilka ended up posting 191/6 with Pranshu Pratap hitting 40 and Sanvir Singh adding 40 off 21 balls.

ABHISHEK’S BLISTER ANSWER

If Gill dominated their one-on-one exchange with the ball, Abhishek was quick to establish himself with the bat. He opened the chase alongside Sahaj Dhawan and helped Amritsar get off to a flying start as the pair put on 79 for the first wicket.

Abhishek’s 15-ball 49 was studded with six fours and four sixes, taking the score past 300. He fell short of his half-century but had already given the Soorms the momentum they needed in their chase of 192.

Fazilka managed to turn things around after Abhishek’s dismissal to reduce Amritsar to 152/5. Rahul Kumar then held the chase together with an unbeaten 53 off 35 balls, taking the Soormas over the line by four wickets with four balls to spare.

Gill’s 67 was the highest score of the match while Abhishek’s 49 proved crucial in setting up Amritsar’s chase. The win kept Soormas’ semi-final hopes alive and gave both Punjab team-mates plenty to talk about after a fairly lively evening at the IS Bindra Stadium.
