US Open: Coco Gauff ended Ivy Jovic’s dream run to set up a quarter-final with Meera Andreeva

Coco Gauff ended Ivy Jovic’s dream run at the US Open on Monday, beating her fellow American 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Jovic reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in New York, capping a breakthrough run with a three-set win over Alexandra Ealova in the previous round. However, the 18-year-old was unable to cause another upset against fourth-seeded Gauff, who remained on course for a second US Open title and a third Grand Slam crown.

The two Americans traded early breaks before Gauff settled into the match. Once she found her rhythm, the 2023 champion took control and broke Jovic twice more to wrap up the opening set in just over 30 minutes.

Jovic looked more comfortable in the second set and was able to hold serve twice before finally getting a break of her own. For a brief period, the teenager seemed to shift the momentum.

However, Gauff responded immediately. Jovic’s errors returned in the decider and she dropped serve again, allowing Gauff to close out the match without further trouble.

Jovic finished the match with 30 unforced errors against just nine winners to end an impressive first run in the second week of the Grand Slam.

Gauff will face Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals, setting up a meeting between the last two French Open winners.

FISHING BEATGGLING OSAKA

Second seed Elena Rybakina kept her quest for a third Grand Slam title alive with a 6-1, 6-4 win over former US Open champion Naomi Osaka.

Still dealing with an Achilles injury that flared up during her win in the previous round, Osaka was unable to keep up with Rybakina.

The win also moved Rybakina to within a single victory of becoming world number one for the first time. She will face Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the quarterfinals.

Zheng once again found a way through a difficult start.

The Chinese star recovered from a 0-5 deficit in the deciding set against Madison Keys in the third round. Against 2022 champion Ize Swiatek, she found herself in another hole after dropping the first five games in just 20 minutes.

But Zheng refused to let the match slip away. She fought to tie the match and finally sealed the win with her fourth match point, dropping to the court and covering her face with her hands in celebration.

With the win, Zheng became the first qualifier since Emma Raducanu in 2021 to reach the women’s singles quarterfinals at the US Open. He is also continuing his campaign while managing a chronic elbow injury.

Andreeva booked her place in the round of 16 after a dramatic 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over Anastasia Potapova.

The match ended in disappointment, Potapova suffered an injury in the last match. The Austrian returned to the court and tried to continue, but Andreeva completed the victory with a backhand winner.

The Russian then crossed the net to embrace her injured opponent as her own quarter-final berth was confirmed.
