Cuddalore MP seeks comprehensive inquiry into safety and maintenance at NLCIL

Cuddalore MP MK Vishnu Prasad (Congress) on Monday accused the NLC India Limited (NLCIL) administration of negligence following the death of a 37-year-old contract worker in an accident at Neyveli Thermal Power Station-II (TPS-II) and demanded an immediate and comprehensive inquiry into safety and maintenance practices at the plant.

In a press statement, Mr. Vishnu Prasad said that K. Muthukrishnan, a contract worker, was working on a platform about 15 meters above the ground in the factory on August 24 when it allegedly tipped over. The worker sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute Hospital in Puducherry, where he succumbed to his injuries, the MP said.

He demanded a detailed probe into NLCIL’s safety and maintenance systems. He said TPS-II had operated for approximately 47 years and required a systematic Life Extension Program (LEP), including inspections of major equipment, structures and components and repair, maintenance and replacement where necessary.

“I have repeatedly raised the need for an LEP for an aging station before the NLC administration, central government and in parliament. However, no clear response or appropriate action has been taken on the matter,” he said.

The MP also referred to allegations of corruption and irregularities in NLCIL and said that a complaint backed by evidence has been submitted to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and a case has been filed in the Madras High Court. He called for a transparent investigation into the alleged irregularities and the death of the worker.

He also urged the central government to intervene, probe the concerned departments and fix accountability if any official is found guilty of wrongdoing. He demanded a comprehensive review of safety and maintenance arrangements at all NLCIL power plants, action against senior officials and others found responsible for the accident and adequate compensation to Muthukrishnan’s family.

The MP sought permanent employment in NLC for one family member of the deceased worker along with other necessary assistance from NLCIL and the Central Government. According to him, the Tamil Nadu government should take cognizance of the incident and take immediate action.
