A Jeddah-bound Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur was diverted to Chennai on Monday following a technical problem with one of its engines, with the airport declaring a full emergency, according to PTI.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH156 with 186 people on board has landed safely at Chennai airport after being diverted. Appropriate emergency response measures have been activated at the airport, the press agency said.

The technical problem involved engine No. 2, an airport official said, according to the report.

“Further assessment of the aircraft and the technical issue is being carried out by the airline and the relevant technical teams,” the spokeswoman said.

The official added that airport operations remain normal.

The airline and technical teams are expected to assess the aircraft to determine the nature and extent of the engine problem. Further details on the cause of the technical problem and the flight’s next route were not immediately available.

There were no immediate reports of injuries after the plane landed safely in Chennai.
