Monsoon Session of Telangana Assembly begins on September 7; forbidden properties to issue House rocks

As expected, the inclusion of large tracts of land in the list of prohibited properties under Section 22A of the Registration Act rocked the Telangana legislature on Monday, the first day of the monsoon session.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders raised the issue immediately when the House assembled for the day and demanded a judicial inquiry into the issue. BJP members barged into the Well of the House and raised slogans demanding a judicial inquiry into the land deals.

Legislative Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu assured members that the government was ready for a brief discussion on the 22A plots. She decided to raise the issue at a meeting of the Trade Advisory Committee scheduled for later in the day and had no objection to the matter being taken up as the first item on the agenda.

However, BJP members led by A. Maheshwar Reddy remained unrelenting and continued their sloganeering displaying banners seeking a debate on land deals. Mr. Sridhar Babu alleged that the BJP members were trying to politicize the issue as was evident from their protest despite assurances from the Finance Ministry.

Chairman G. Prasad Kumar also tried to convince the members who claimed that the issue would be taken up by the BAC and discussion would be allowed. Roads and Buildings Minister Komatlreddy Venkat Reddy, who intervened, lamented that the BJP members were not backing down despite assurances given by the Legislative Affairs Minister. He accused the BJP of colluding with the main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and delaying the CBI probe into the Kaleshwaram project irregularities. “BJP must answer why CBI inquiry not ordered?” he said.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who was watching the proceedings, left the House amid the uproar created by members promoting slogans. With the continued shouting of the slogan, the Speaker adjourned the House for 14 minutes.
