Four police officers were suspended following a complaint of torture in custody

Four police officers at the Kalady station have been suspended pending an investigation into a complaint of custodial torture.

The cops facing the action are sub-inspectors Ajmal and Nisar KV, senior civil constable Rajith Rajan and civil constable Dhanesh KR Ernakulam Range DIG Yathish Chandra GH issued the suspension order on Sunday (September 6) based on an internal inquiry report by District Superintendent of Police (Ernakulam Rural) KS Sudarshan.

The action was initiated on a complaint filed by Sujith Jayan, 32, a resident of Sreemoolanagaram near Aluva, who works as a taxi driver at the Cochin International Airport.

In his complaint to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithal, Mr. Sujith alleged that four police officers brutally assaulted him after they took him into custody from his house on September 2 as part of an investigation into the case of one of his friends.

According to the DIG’s order, an internal inquiry found that Mr. Sujith was illegally taken into custody and detained at Kalady station from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM without entering the details in the general diary or informing his relatives.

A lawyer representing Mr Sujith said further legal action would be taken against the policemen for alleged illegal detention, custodial torture and atrocities against members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
