Karnataka appeals to CWMA to reduce water discharge

Ahead of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) meeting scheduled for this week, Karnataka has appealed to the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to reduce the release of water to Tamil Nadu from 9,000 cusecs per day, as ordered, to 2,000 cusecs.

It may be noted that CWMA has confirmed CWRC’s August 25 direction to Karnataka and asked it to ensure flows of 9,000 cusecs per day for 15 days from August 25 to be implemented at Biligundlu water gauge on the interstate border. According to the CWMA order, Karnataka’s release would total 11.66 tmcft.

The CWRC will meet again on September 8 to review the situation at the country level. The CWMA will also meet on the same day to review the situation.

Meanwhile, Karnataka has appealed to the CWMA to reduce water release on the grounds that inflows into its Cauvery reservoirs are very low. She also pointed out that the southwest monsoon is set to end soon, indicating that the state has no hope of further inflows into its Cauvery reservoirs in the future.

It may be noted that on August 25, Karnataka appealed to the CWMA to take a cautious approach and ask for any further relaxation, asking the authority to reassess the situation after observing the upcoming Northeast Monsoon. The state told the CWMA that its Cauvery catchment area was facing serious hydrological problems due to which cumulative inflows into its four reservoirs in the Cauvery catchment were about 49.18% below the 30-year average.
