Rahul Gandhi targets PM Modi over police action against Bihar students

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday (September 6, 2026) slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary over police action against protesting students in Bihar and demanded that their broken bones be mended if their shattered dreams could be restored.

Mr Gandhi shared a video of his recent meeting with students and youth from Bihar, who he said had endured “terrible police brutality” for raising their voice against alleged irregularities in the examination system.

In his post in Hindi, which accompanied the video, Mr Gandhi said: “Imagine what sin these children have committed to be shot by bullets? They were asking the government for only three things – education, employment and responsibility. One student’s leg bone was broken by an AK-47 bullet. His dream of joining the army and serving the nation was dashed along with it,” the leader of the two Opposition students in Bullets Lokha said.

He argued that the students were not criminals and said they were children from poor families who went to study and carried their family dreams. “Some wanted a good job, some wanted to change their family’s circumstances,” he said.

“Bullet wounds will heal, but where is the hospital that treats the fear that has now settled deep inside these children?” asked Mr. Gandhi.

“Prime Minister Ji, Chief Minister Ji, their broken bones would be mended. Can you restore their shattered dreams?” he asked.

Addressing students from Bihar on Thursday (September 3, 2026), Mr Gandhi said the BJP should remember that any regime that suppresses the voice of the youth must ultimately answer to the people, and said that day was not far off.

“Police lathis as well as AK-47 and pistol firing caused injuries to many students. A young man who wanted to serve the country in the army had his leg crushed by an AK-47 bullet and his lifelong dream was also destroyed with it,” Gandhi said.

“These young people were only demanding fair opportunities, a transparent examination system and their rights,” he added.

“What was the need to use lathis and bullets in response to such demands?” asked the Congress leader.

“The government cannot absolve itself of responsibility for such extreme brutality by blaming only a few low-ranking officials. This action is either the result of orders from above or a sign of total failure of the administration,” he said.

“Whatever the Bihar government does, I stand with these young people. I am ready to give them all possible help,” Gandhi said.

Last month, Patna witnessed a pitched battle between job seekers and the police when protesters tried to march towards the Chief Minister’s residence, demanding a one-tier teachers’ exam and a transparent recruitment process.

The student protest in Bihar, which began in the first week of August, received support from opposition leaders, including RJD working president Tejashwi Yadav.
