Delhi Building Collapse News LIVE: A decades-old, five-storey building housing a boys’ hostel collapsed in a narrow lane at Satya Niketan near Delhi University’s South Campus on Sunday afternoon, killing two people and leaving several others feared trapped, officials said.

At least five people are critical, PTI reported citing sources.

Police said six people have been rescued from the wreckage so far. One of them was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, five others were rescued alive. However, residents estimated that 40 to 50 people may still be trapped inside the collapsed structure, which had a basement and five floors above ground.

The building was being used as a paying guest (PG) facility and repairs were reportedly being carried out in its basement when it came down around 1.30 pm, according to a senior officer. Personnel of Delhi Police, NDRF, Delhi Fire Service and DDMA along with fire brigade and CATS ambulances were deployed to the spot to carry out the rescue operation.

This location consists of densely packed buildings, narrow streets, restaurants and numerous PG accommodation catering to the student population. Crowded surroundings make it difficult for emergency vehicles to access. Residents said a large number of students living there came from Kerala, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and attended colleges located nearby across the street.

Amid the ongoing rescue operation, local residents and eyewitnesses also stepped in to help, searching the debris with their hands and whatever equipment they could find to find people believed to be buried under the debris.
