Renovated Amma Canteen in Arakkonam inaugurated

After more than a decade since its opening, the Amma canteen near the old bus stand in Arakkonam town in Ranipet got a new lease of life on Saturday when Cooperation Minister V Gandhiraj inaugurated the renovated facility.

Civic officials said former chief minister Jayalalithaa virtually inaugurated Amma canteens in Ranipet, Arcot, Arakkonam and Walajah towns in the district in 2015 when the program was launched in the state.

Since then, the building has not been reconstructed. “For the first time, the municipality has completed the restoration work on the canteens and improved the civic amenities for the visitors,” G. Anandan, Arakkonam Municipal Commissioner, told The Hindu.

Accompanied by Collector N. Priya Ravichandran, Mr. Gandhiraj inspected the renovated canteen, which was done in the city at a cost of ₹ 11 lakh.

Renovated at a cost of ₹9 lakh, the canteen in Walajah will be opened to the public in the coming week.

The kitchen has been renovated with new plumbing and cookware. The electrical wiring was also thoroughly checked to prevent current fluctuations and short circuits. The 50,000 liter overhead tank was cleaned.

To ensure a continuous water supply, the motor pumping units connected to the boreholes that supply the canteens with water have been reconstructed. The device was also given a new coat of paint.
