Kanthapuram says he will defend Sharia law no matter who opposes it

Kanthapuram Sunni leader AP Aboobacker Musliar said he would uphold and defend Sharia law “no matter who opposes”.

He was addressing the International Milad Conference organized by Markaz and Kerala Muslim Jamaath here on Saturday (September 5, 2026). Mr. Musliar also said that Sharia conferences would be organized in all districts to mark the centenary of Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama. He claimed that there will be people who will talk about Islamic laws until the end of the world.

The remark comes days after Mr Musliar said women should be confined to their homes. This drew widespread criticism, including from Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan. The latest statement is widely seen as a vindication of his remark.
