Ernakulam continues to report the highest number of flu cases in the state, with the trend showing no sign of abating even in September.

Even though the cases are high compared to other districts, the medical fraternity is of the opinion that the disease is slowly losing its grip but still caution needs to be taken to prevent the disease from spreading.

Meanwhile, district physician Dr. R. Shahirsha said that there is no reason to worry about this disease. “The numbers are high because the district has a more mobile community. Also, more tests are being done, leading to higher reporting of the disease. Social distancing and wearing masks are among the key measures to control its spread,” said Dr. Shahirsha.

Of the 607 cases reported in the state in the first five days of the month, 274 cases were from Ernakulam. Five deaths have been reported this month. Of the more than 2,700 cases reported in the state in August, as many as 954 cases were from the district. The total number of cases in the state this year stood at 9,377, with 104 deaths reported.

Dr. G. Sathyajith Nair, pediatrician and secretary, Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), Kochi Branch, said the number of cases has gradually started showing a downward trend.

“We have overcome a wave of increased reporting of cases where hospitals were running out of beds for patients. Now, even when people do get infected, the severity of the disease has lessened,” said Dr. Nair.

He added that within two months the cases will decrease. “After the pandemic, it became a common thing. The only solution is to get vaccinated, which prevents the need for hospitalization or any complications from the disease. This time, the children who were vaccinated against the disease were the least affected,” said Dr. Nair.
