The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday (5 September 2026) attacked the Congress over the representation of women in its state governments, alleging “hypocrisy” on the issue of women’s empowerment.

Addressing a press conference, BJP spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said the Congress is in power in four states but has only three women ministers. Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka had no female ministers, while Kerala had two and Telangana two, one of which was removed.

Mr. Trivedi said the numbers exposed what he called the “hypocrisy” of the Congress. He said that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had earlier written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ask for the introduction of women’s reservation without waiting for delimitation, even as his own state governments did not reflect the same commitment.

Mr. Trivedi cited the Narendra Modi government’s initiatives for women, including Jan Dhan accounts, the Ujjwala LPG connection scheme, construction of toilets and standing commissions for women in the armed forces, as examples of the government’s focus on women empowerment.

He also criticized the Congress for allegedly rigging questions in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) examination. Ending the ‘paper loot’ incident, he accused the opposition parties of being selective in raising questions related to the investigation and keeping silent on the Jharkhand case.
