Andhra Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan directs APPCB to study water pollution in Godavari river

Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Environment and Forests K. Pawan Kalyan has directed the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) to conduct a comprehensive scientific study on water pollution in the Godavari River between Rajamahendravaram and Antarvedi and sewage in the region.

In May, a state-level task force headed by Principal Secretary Environment and Forests and Member Secretary APPCB was set up to deal with Godavari pollution. The members of the task force are the Collectors of East Godavari, Kakinada, Dr. BR Ambedkar Konaseema and West Godavari.

“The APPCB will collect water samples from the Godavari, 15 major drains and 45 minor drains for scientific analysis to document the pollution levels and sources,” an official release released on Thursday quoted Mr. Pawan Kalyan as saying.

“During the study, sewage and untreated industrial waste discharged into the Godavari through drains from 262 gram panchayats and urban local bodies will also be tested,” said Mr. Pawan Kalyan.

The APPCB has been directed to utilize the ₹100 crore fund released for Godavari conservation in May for monitoring, comprehensive study and measures to tackle the pollution, he said. The aim of the study is to help check the prevention of pollution of Godavari water before Godavari Pushkarams-2027.
