Cockroach found in patient’s food: FDA closes canteen at Maharashtra’s Thane government hospital | Today’s news
The canteen of the civic-run Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa was closed here after a patient allegedly found a cockroach in his food and the Maharashtra Food and Drug Authority (FDA) found violations of several norms during an inspection.
The dining hall will remain closed until a full inspection is completed and the FDA grants approval, Dean Dr. Swapnali Kadam.
On August 28, a patient admitted for eye surgery complained of finding a cockroach on his plate. Members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) staged a protest at the dean’s office to condemn the negligence.
Following the protest, FDA officials inspected the hospital’s kitchen and cited several food safety violations, leading to the immediate suspension of cafeteria services.
The FDA also initiated action against Ram Caterers, the canteen’s supplier.
Dr. Kadam said the supplier would not be able to resume operations without formal approval from the FDA.
Alternative meals were prepared for patients, she said.
