Police officer caught accepting ₹20,000 bribe; another constable runs away

The Karnataka Lokayukta Police on Thursday caught a police constable in the act of allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹20,000, but his colleague, who was also allegedly involved in the demand, managed to flee the spot before the Lokayukta police could identify him.

The accused have been identified as Parashuram and Veeresh, both attached to Brahmapur police station in Kalaburagi town. According to the Lokayukta police, the two constables allegedly demanded money from Kanna Raju Patil of Bapu Nagar and threatened to surrender to his son Karthik if he did not pay the bribe.

The complainant alleged that two police officers visited his house and intimidated the family by accusing his son of involvement in theft and robbery. They allegedly threatened to keep him at the police station at night and take him away from the area. The cops initially demanded ₹1 lakh and got ₹50,000 as a deposit, then allegedly demanded another ₹20,000, police said.

Acting on a complaint, the police laid a trap and caught Parashuram red-handed while he was allegedly accepting ₹20,000 from the complainant. However, Veeresh reportedly realized that a trap had been laid and fled the spot before the Lokayukta officers could identify him.

“There were five to six uniformed policemen there. Our officers caught Parashuram while he was taking the bribe. Before they could identify Veeresh, he fled from the spot. We will nab him soon,” Karnataka Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Siddaraju C told The Hindu.

Lokayukta police have launched efforts to trace Veeresh.
