Pakistan out of Women’s Champions Trophy 2027: When was the last time they missed out on the ICC race?
Pakistan Women have been left out of the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027, ending their hopes of featuring in the next major global event just months after a disappointing World T20 campaign.
The six-team tournament will be held in Mumbai and Vadodara from 14 to 28 February 2027. Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka have qualified for the competition, with teams earning their place based on their position in the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings at the qualification deadline of 6 July 2026.
For Pakistan, the ban is particularly significant as they have featured regularly in recent ICC events in men’s and women’s cricket. Their poor placing meant they failed to progress to the six-man squad, while Sri Lanka secured the final vacant place among the qualified sides.
The last time Pakistan missed out on an ICC event was the 2005 Women’s ODI World Cup hosted by South Africa. They made their ODI World Cup debut in 1997 before missing the 2000 edition in New Zealand and then the 2005 tournament. Since returning to the 2009 World Cup, Pakistan have featured regularly at the global level, making their absence from the inaugural Champions Trophy a significant setback.
The Champions Trophy will be played in a round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the final. Sri Lanka was originally scheduled to host the tournament, but the ICC confirmed on 2 September that India would host the inaugural edition instead.
PAKISTAN’S LAST HITS T20I
Pakistan’s exclusion from the Women’s Champions Trophy reflects their efforts to remain among the top teams in T20I cricket. Their disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s World T20 in England highlighted these concerns, with Pakistan losing four of their five group matches.
They started with a 64 run defeat against India before suffering further losses in South Africa and Bangladesh. They suffered their heaviest defeat against Australia, who posted 199/7 before bowling out Pakistan for just 86 in 13.4 overs to win by 113 runs. Pakistan eventually recorded their only win of the tournament, defeating the Netherlands by 37 runs. Their one win record underlined their struggle for consistency against the top teams.
Pakistan’s struggles continued even after the World Cup. They lost the opening two matches of the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka before salvaging some pride with a four-wicket victory in the last match.
However, they have started their Women’s Asia Cup campaign on a positive note. Pakistan beat Thailand by 35 runs in Dubai after posting 119/9 with Muneeba Ali scoring 54. Sadia Iqbal then claimed three wickets for 11 runs as Thailand were restricted to 84/8.
Pakistan now face a much bigger challenge when they take on arch-rivals India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday, September 5.
