I have watched Chennai grow and change over the years

Thara R., Co-Founder and Psychiatrist, Schizophrenia Research Foundation, Chennai

I was born in Chennai and spent almost my entire life here. My earliest memories are of a very different Madras – quiet roads, wide pavements, tree-lined streets and spacious houses. Early mornings brought deliveries of milk and newspapers, temple music during Margazhi and MGR songs from loudspeakers.

Marina Beach was another favorite. It was quieter and cleaner then and later became part of my routine for morning walks with my dogs and familiar faces along the coast.

December meant music season. As a busy doctor, concerts offered a much-needed break, while sabha canteens, filter coffee and conversation became part of the experience.

Chennai is also very welcoming to me as a doctor. I have always appreciated patients’ and families’ trust in doctors and the city’s interest in healthcare.

I watched the city become busier and more crowded, with traffic, pollution, heat and changing lifestyles. Yet his warmth and goodness remain.

I have traveled a lot but Chennai has always been where I belong. Its streets contain memories of growing up, friendship, medicine and every stage of my life.
