The police reject the charge of assault in the man’s death, the investigation continues

The Tadikonda police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which corresponds to the earlier Section 174 of the Cr.PC, and have started an investigation into the suspicious death of 30-year-old Chikati Gopi of Ponnekallu village in Tadikonda mandal.

According to a press statement issued by District Inspector of Police Vakul Jindal’s office on Wednesday, Gopi was summoned to the Tadikonda police station on June 25 in connection with a theft case and was released the next day.

His family later noticed that he had developed a fever and took him to the Ponnekal Government Hospital. On the advice of doctors, he was shifted to Guntur Government Hospital and subsequently to Tenali Government Hospital for further treatment.

He underwent treatment in Tenali till August 31, after which he was shifted back to Guntur Government Hospital. Doctors pronounced him dead on September 1 after he complained of chest pain.

Following a written complaint by his wife Jyothi, the police registered a case under Section 194 of the BNSS.

Police said rumors were rife that Gopi had died after being attacked at the police station. Police said CCTV footage from Tadikonda police station has been examined so far and no evidence of Gopi being physically assaulted has been found.

To ensure an impartial investigation, Medikonduru Inspector M. Madhusudana Rao was appointed as the investigating officer. Police said the investigation and post-mortem have been completed and the body has been handed over to relatives.

The investigation continues. Police appealed to people not to believe and spread unverified information.
