Uber is laying off 10% of its workforce as part of a major reorganization

Uber is laying off roughly 10 percent of its workforce, a total of about 3,300 people, as the company restructures to become “simpler and faster,” CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said Wednesday.

The layoffs are to affect 20 percent of rank-and-file employees who are seven or more layers below Mr. Khosrowshahi, he said. He added that Uber would increase the number of employees under each manager by halving teams that had only one or two workers, bringing the company level with the country.

“A lean organization will mean clearer ownership, faster decision-making and more time spent building rather than coordinating,” Mr. Khosrowshahi said in a memo to employees. “It will also deliver savings that we intend to reinvest in the growth, innovation and capabilities that will be most important in the coming years.”

He said Uber’s revenue has nearly tripled over the past five years, but that rapid growth has brought “more layers, more coordination and more fragmented ownership.”

Tech companies including Meta, Coinbase and Block have laid off hundreds to thousands of employees this year. Many cited artificial intelligence as the reason, although analysts and economists said the technology could offer a smokescreen for those looking to boost profits or fix old mistakes.

Mr. Khosrowshahi did not blame AI for the layoffs. Uber is expanding into autonomous driving in places like London and has said it wants to build the world’s largest platform for self-driving vehicles.

In Wednesday’s announcement, Uber said it will also consolidate its delivery operations and some engineering and science teams.

The company plans to concentrate global teams in New York and San Francisco, and regional and local teams in other centers. Mr. Khosrowshahi said most remote workers were asked to move into the office, leaving 1 percent of employees completely remote while the company strengthened its three-day-a-week hybrid policy.

Uber said it had no further comment beyond Mr. Khosrowshahi’s remarks.
