The Glasgow Commonwealth Games medal draw opens the door for judokas from Japan

(PTI photo) NEW DELHI: A haul of four medals in Glasgow has opened a new window of opportunity for Indian judokas. The sport’s success at the Commonwealth Games paved the way for overseas training ahead of two major international assignments. The Indian team heading to the Asian Games will go to Japan for a pre-match camp, while another group of judokas will also be overseas ahead of the World Championships. The Sports Ministry also cleared the Japanese camp for the senior team preparing for the World Judo Championships in Baku from October 4.India’s impressive campaign in Glasgow, including maiden CWG golds for Asmita and Harsh Singh, helped strengthen the case for overseas exposure. Asmita Dey (Under 48kg), Yamini Mourya (Under 57kg) and Inunganbi Takhellambam (Under 70kg) will train at Tsukuba University from September 5 to October 2, gaining valuable experience and acclimatising to the conditions ahead of the Aichi-Nagoya Games starting on September 19 TOI.However, several Glasgow participants are not part of the Asian Games squad as they do not meet the criteria for selection among the top six in Asia individually or the top eight in teams.
