NHAI resumes two-way traffic around Green Circle in Vellore city

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Tuesday resumed regular two-way traffic around Green Circle, a roundabout under the Chennai – Bengaluru National Highway (NH 48) elevated corridor in Vellore city.

NHAI officials said the traffic restrictions around the Green Ring are in effect from July 12 to facilitate the second and final phase of the Metro work there. When the underground work of the ₹7.50 crore project was completed, the NHAI opened the carriageway around the green ring road for regular traffic. “Resumption of traffic movement will help reduce the waiting time for motorists,” said an NHAI official.

Previously, only light vehicles such as two-wheelers, auto rickshaws and automobiles were allowed to use the service lane to proceed towards the green circle. Other vehicles had to use the Chennai – Bengaluru Highway. Due to the traffic diversions that have been in place since July 12, heavy vehicles had to take a 2 km detour to the Green Ring.

“The resumption of regular traffic is a big relief for motorists and pedestrians as the movement of vehicles is steady and gradual. It also helps pedestrians cross the green belt safely,” said G. Sugan, a motorist.

As the roundabout was identified as a “black spot” (accident prone), the NHAI decided to construct a metro. The entire work will be completed before the northeast monsoon.
