The new foundation proposed to strengthen heritage conservation across Karnataka through adoption

The Karnataka Tourism Department on Tuesday proposed setting up of the Karnataka Cultural and Cultural Foundation (KHCF) to systematically protect the state’s historical monuments, archaeological sites, museums and cultural assets while promoting Karnataka’s art, culture and heritage globally.

Tourism Minister KJ George said, “The Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage has prepared a proposal and it will be submitted to the state cabinet soon.”

According to details shared by the tourism department, the KHCF seeks to build on the positive response to the state’s Adopt a Monument initiative by creating a structured platform for the government, the private sector and the public to participate in the conservation, restoration and infrastructure development of historical monuments.

Mr. George added, “A survey conducted among the 239 talukas of Karnataka has identified nearly one million historical monuments and archaeological sites. Given the scale and diversity of this heritage. A sustainable and long-term funding mechanism is needed for their preservation.”

Through this foundation, the department also seeks to pool CSR contributions from corporates, non-resident Indians and public donations through a transparent mechanism. KHCF will also create programs that allow younger generations to engage directly with historic sites, art and local traditions rather than experiencing their heritage only through textbooks.

Meanwhile, V. Ram Prasath Manohar, secretary, tourism department, said, “There is a need to create long-term resources to preserve Karnataka’s heritage through shared responsibility between the government and society. The foundation will help them maintain transparency and accountability in financial management, accounting and auditing.”
