2026 Canadian Grand Prix: George Russell grabs pole as Antonelli, McLaren and Ferrari prepare for fierce battle
Canadian Grand Prix (Image: F1) The fourth round of the 2026 Formula 1 season is finally here as attention shifts to the iconic Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. After an action-packed sprint weekend and intense qualifying, all eyes are now on the main race, which will begin in the early hours of 25th May at 1:30am IST.George Russell will start from pole position after setting a stunning lap of 1:12.578 in qualifying, just hours after taking victory in the sprint race. The Mercedes driver continues to build on what has become a remarkable love affair with Montreal, a circuit where he has also secured pole position and victory in the 2025 season.Alongside George Russell will be his Mercedes teammate and current championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The 19-year-old rookie has been the breakout star of the season so far, winning three consecutive Grands Prix and building a 20-point lead over Russell in the standings. This weekend is also Montreal’s first-ever Sprint format race under Formula 1’s new structure, leaving teams with just one practice session before competitive driving begins.Mercedes have completely dominated the early stage of the new Formula 1 rules for 2026 with their dominant W17 machine, winning all four races so far this season. But despite the Silver Arrows once again locking down the front row, the pressure is quickly building at the back. McLaren will line up right behind the Mercedes pair after unveiling a major upgrade to the MCL40 this weekend. With both Norris and Piastri setting impressive pace during qualifying, McLaren remain firmly in the hunt.Meanwhile, Ferrari arrive in Canada looking for momentum after a mixed start to the season. For Lewis Hamilton in particular, Montreal could prove to be a turning point in his Ferrari campaign. Lewis Hamilton shares the all-time record for Canadian Grand Prix wins, tied with the legendary Michael Schumacher with 7 wins.It was a much more frustrating weekend for Oracle Red Bull Racing. As part of the new Red Bull-Ford powertrain partnership introduced with the 2026 regulations overhaul, the team has sought to unleash the pace needed to challenge Mercedes.Four-time world champion Max Verstappen looked visibly frustrated during the sprint and qualifying, repeatedly complaining about the RB22’s lack of straight-line speed. Verstappen eventually qualified more than three-tenths behind Russell’s pole time. Max Verstappen has won the Canadian Grand Prix three times and secured a dominant hat-trick of consecutive wins from 2022 to 2024. Isack Hadjar will start alongside Verstappen from sixth. Now, in addition to the race, the ever-increasing rivalry between Russell and Antonelli in the Mercedes garage added even more tension to the weekend. During the sprint race, Russell aggressively defended the lead on lap 6, pinning Antonelli in the second corner and forcing the young Italian onto the grass. Antonelli immediately vented his frustration over the team radio, calling the move “very naughty” and demanding a penalty. The situation became so heated that Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff got on the radio and firmly told Antonelli to “stop moaning on the radio”.Despite the tension, Antonelli looked poised to claim pole later in qualifying. But Russell delivered when it mattered most, handling his final flying lap perfectly to take pole by just 0.068 seconds. With intra-team rivalries mounting, McLaren closing in, Ferrari desperate for a breakthrough and Verstappen fighting to stay in the championship picture, the stage is perfectly set for one of the most dramatic races of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
