Revanth meets Venugopal amid talk of disciplinary action against Surekha, Chinna Reddy

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met AICC General Secretary (Organization) KC Venugopal in New Delhi on Tuesday for nearly an hour amid indications that the Congress leadership was mulling disciplinary action against Minister Konda Surekh and senior party leader G. Chinna Reddy.

The meeting mainly focused on Ms. Surekha and the political impact of recent developments around her. Mr. Revanth Reddy is learned to have conveyed to Mr. Venugopal that disciplinary action is necessary to prevent the issue from affecting the image and functioning of the government.

The Chief Minister reportedly explained that Ms. Surekha was also given considerable latitude in the past, but she had not changed her approach. He is also believed to have pointed out that several Congress MLAs from the erstwhile Warangal district were not on cordial terms with her, adding to political complications.

However, the Chief Minister is said to have left the decision to the AICC and would be happy with any decision.

The question regarding the lead actress Chinny Reddy also came into the discussion. Despite his seniority and loyalty, his recent remarks about money in ticket distribution are understood to have raised concerns in the Congress leadership. His comments could also potentially damage the AICC, especially since the central leadership has a crucial role in selecting candidates, sources said.

Mr. Venugopal is expected to meet Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Mahesh Kumar Gouda and state party affairs in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan on Wednesday to seek their views on the development. Both are understood to be in favor of some disciplinary action against erring leaders.

However, no decision is expected until Thursday, with the AICC looking into the political implications of any disciplinary action. The management is particularly aware of the sensitivities involved in taking action against Ms. Surekha, who is the leader of the BC. Any punitive action against her could have wider political ramifications and could unduly favor the opposition BRS and BJP.

The Congress leadership is also traditionally cautious in dealing with disciplinary issues involving women leaders, especially when it comes to social and political aspects.
