Shreyas Iyer vs Suryakumar Yadav: Mumbai face a tough white ball captaincy task

Mumbai have a leadership decision to make in white-ball cricket, and it’s a decision that brings more intrigue than usual. With Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav both options available, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) have two proven leaders to choose from, although their international commitments could ultimately decide who takes charge.

Iyer currently holds the larger claim on paper. In June, he was named India’s T20I captain and then replaced Suryakumar the latter led India to their second successive T20 World Cup title earlier in the year. The change marked a significant shift, with Iyer taking charge despite not having played a T20I since December 2023.

However, Suryakumar remains an accomplished captain in his own right. Before the change in management, he led India in 50 completed T20Is, winning 42 of them. His Mumbai experience also makes him a natural candidate should he be available for domestic cricket.

Iyer has already proven his credentials in Mumbai. In 2024–25, he captained the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy side when Mumbai defeated Madhya Pradesh in the final to win their second title in the competition.

The MCA therefore leaves both options open.

“We have both Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav as the white-ball captain but it depends on their availability,” a senior MCA official told PTI.

This availability can be key. With Iyer now leading India in T20Is and Suryakumar still looking for a way back into the national side, Mumbai may have to plan their international schedules rather than deciding between them outright.

SIDDHESH LAD GETS CHANCE TO LEAD MUMBAI RED-BALL TEAM

The captain’s image is clearer in red ball cricket. Veteran middle-order batsman Siddhesh Lad has replaced Shardul Thakur as Ranji Trophy captain in Mumbai, a move designed to manage Thakur’s workload and maximize his contribution as a red-ball front-runner.

It will be Mumbai’s second consecutive Ranji season with a new captain after Thakur replaced Ajinkya Rahane last season. Rahane, who retired from all forms of cricket in July, led Mumbai to a record 42nd Ranji Trophy title in 2023-24.

Lad brings strong current form to the role. In eight Ranji matches last season, he scored 774 runs at an average of 77.40, including five hundreds and a fifty. Mumbai will begin their campaign against Chandigarh on October 11 in the elite Group D.

After reaching the Ranji quarter-finals last season, Mumbai will be hoping their new management structure can deliver a stronger campaign, while their white-ball captaincy remains a fascinating two-way battle between Iyer and Suryakumar.
