
The activists belonging to Saman Manaskar Vedike and other Dalit organizations installed a road name tag bearing “Dr. Br Ambedkar Double Road”, on a section of 100 feet. Mandyi roads to make Mark Dr. Ambedka’s anniversary on Monday.
According to Lakshman Cheeranhalli of Vedike, the road in the commercial area of Mandya has been referred to as “100-FT. Road”, although the city council (CMC) in Mandya passed 50 years ago in 1975 to rename the road as “Dr. Ambedcar Road”.
Given the lack of political will, the authorities were unable to make a solution. Dalit’s efforts and other progressive organizations officially name the road after Dr. Ambedkar did not bring any positive results, he said.
Activists, however, decided to install the road plates “Dr. Ambedka Double Road” on the 100-FT section. The way between the Cauver school to GoWrishankar Community Hall on the occasion of the birth of Dr. Ambedkara.
Mr. Lakshman said that various organizations such as Sama Manaskar Vedike and Dalit Groups tried to alert the authorities by inserting vinyl stickers on the road and named it as Dr. Ambedkar Road before Dr. Ambedkar Jayanthi. But the police removed the stickers, he said.
On the occasion of Ambedka Jayanti, however, we remained minors and installed names, he said.
Mr. Lakshman said that the authorities tried to rename the road along Kevegowda last year, but Dalit and other groups protested against movement and caught the attention of the CMC on the 1975 resolution.
