41% increase in domestic cargo at Thiruvananthapuram airport

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has recorded a 41% increase in domestic cargo handling during the first five months of FY 2026-27 compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. Currently, the domestic cargo division handles an average of 350 metric tons of cargo per month.

The airport handles a wide range of outbound cargo, including flowers, chilled fish, ornamental fish, medical kits, couriers, postal items and rubber stems. Rubber stalks are transported from Kerala to various North Eastern states, which promotes the movement of plantation related products across the country. The ornamental fish are transported to destinations including Delhi, Agra and Jammu.

On the inbound side, major commodities include drugs, vaccines, medical equipment, mobile phones, meat products, couriers, auto parts, mail, lenses and other basic commodities. The air freight network enables the rapid and reliable movement of time-sensitive products, particularly those supporting healthcare, agriculture and fisheries.

The recent commencement of full-fledged Export-Import (EXIM) operations at Vizhinjam International Seaport is expected to further strengthen the logistics ecosystem in the region. The airport’s proximity to Vizhinjam provides an opportunity to develop a stronger air-sea cargo nexus, allowing businesses to choose the most efficient mode of transport based on the nature and urgency of their cargo, airport authorities said.

With domestic air cargo witnessing strong growth and Vizhinjam emerging as a major international sea gateway, Thiruvananthapuram is well positioned to develop into an integrated multi-modal logistics hub, strengthening Kerala’s role in the national and global supply chain, officials said.
