One Indian expert has advised students and working professionals to think twice before choosing the US for higher education or career opportunities, arguing that uncertainty over immigration and labor rules has made the country a less attractive destination.

In an Instagram post, Anushk Sharma went as far as to say, “US is dead now,” while appealing to Indians considering moving there. “Honestly, I’m asking you to join me, I pray – America should come now,” he said.

Indian urges students to rethink US plans

Sharma, who said he has personally assisted students planning to study in the US, said he was no longer comfortable recommending the country amid the current uncertainty.

He specifically warned students pursuing business-related programs not to choose the US, suggesting institutions like Oxford and Cambridge instead. Depending on the course and career path, he also named Canada, Germany and Switzerland as alternatives.

His comments come as international students and foreign workers continue to face uncertainty about changes and proposed changes to US immigration and employment policies.

Uncertainty of CPT, OPT raises concerns

A key part of Sharma’s argument centered on Curricular Practical Training, or CPT, which allows eligible F-1 students to take certain jobs outside of school, including internships, when the work is an integral part of their academic curriculum.

Sharma claimed that the CPT had been suspended and warned that it may be difficult for students to gain experience in the US without access to the program. However, in the description of the post, he clarified that the CPT itself was not abolished. According to him, the credit version of CPT has become unavailable at some universities due to new compliance requirements.

He also mentioned Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows eligible F-1 students to work temporarily in the US in a field related to their studies.

Sharma raised concerns about the proposed $100,000 fee associated with OPT and the $100,000 H-1B fee, arguing that the uncertainty surrounding such measures could make moving to the US a risky financial decision.

‘It’s not worth it anymore’

Sharma said the uncertainty can be especially difficult for students who depend on internships and job opportunities after completing their education.

“It’s not worth it anymore. Bilkul bhi nahi hai,” he said, although he noted that he used to help students find opportunities in the US.

He added: “Specifically, if you just came for business programs, then absolutely do not come.”

For students studying technology-related courses, Sharma recommended Germany and Switzerland be considered. However, he acknowledged that salaries in these countries may not be comparable to those available in the US.

In a caption accompanying the video, Sharma reiterated his stance while acknowledging that several of the proposed changes have not yet been finalized.
