Ankit Balyan murder case: Two suspects killed in encounter with Shamli police

Two suspects allegedly involved in the murder of Haryanvi singer and YouTuber Ankit Balyan were killed in an encounter with Shamli police and a SWAT team, officials said on Monday (31 Aug 2026).
The two men, identified as 24-year-old Sumit and 22-year-old Mohit, carried a reward of ₹50,000 each. Both were declared brought dead at the District General Hospital, Shamli, where they were taken for treatment after sustaining gunshot injuries during the encounter.
A statement by the Superintendent of Police (SP) Shamli said two sharpshooters were “injured by firing during retaliatory firing by police in self-defence in a joint operation by Kotwali Shamli Police Station, Jhinjhana Police Station and Shamli SWAT Team”.
The injured accused persons were taken to Shamli District Joint Hospital for treatment, where doctors declared both brought dead during treatment, the statement added.
Senior constables Harvinder and Pradeep of the SWAT team were injured in the firing during the encounter, the statement said.
Police recovered two pistols along with 10 live and nine spent cartridges of .30 caliber, another pistol along with 16 live and six spent cartridges, one Splendor motorcycle, one bag, one mobile phone and cash amounting to ₹5,000 from the scene of the incident.
Court proceedings are underway at the Kotwali Shamli police station regarding the incident. About 14 cases are registered against Mohit and one against Sumit in Haryana, the SP’s office said, adding that information about their other criminal pasts is being ascertained.
Balyan’s death
Uttar Pradesh’s Special Task Force and other police teams were working to identify the four assailants who allegedly shot dead Balyan in Shamli after tracking their escape route to Haryana using CCTV footage, officials said on Friday (August 28).
Sources said CCTV footage from several locations in Shamli, Loni in Ghaziabad, Delhi and Sonipat captured four men fleeing on two motorcycles after the shooting.
Balyan promoted his song ‘Baby Badmash’, released last month, and sang a few of its lines, including “Murder maar de sadak ke upar (murder on the way)” to his followers on Instagram in the video. Hours later, he was gunned down in a manner eerily reminiscent of the setting described in the song.
Balyan was leaving a gymnasium in Kotwali area of Shamli on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 at around 6:45 pm when four assailants traveling on two motorcycles opened fire on him. He suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the community health center, police said.
