Four gunmen killed in Meghalaya encounter

Four armed men, allegedly members of an inter-state gang, were killed in an encounter with the Meghalaya Police in the early hours of Sunday (August 30, 2026).

The incident took place around 4 am near Songsak in East Garo Hills district when the four opened fire after being asked to stop at a check post. The police claimed that their staff retaliated and four died in the shootout.

The four were identified as Alachon Marak from Meghalaya and Kalam Sheikh, Bhabidul Islam and Sustam Rabha from Assam. One of the gang members was allegedly involved in the August 23 shooting of a businessman from Assam, while another was involved in a robbery in Assam five years ago.

“The bodies of the four men have been taken for post-mortem. Further investigation into the incident and criminal cases linked to the group is underway,” said a Meghalaya-based police official.
