PCB warns Pakistan players not to talk about Imran Khan’s imprisonment
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has advised its players involved in the Test series against England not to comment on the issue of Imran Khan’s imprisonment.
This comes after the British media tried to lure some of them to comment on the imprisonment of World Cup-winning captain Imran back in the country.
The problem subsequently gained momentum Sky Sports interview with Imran’s sons, broadcast during the lunch break on the second day of the second Test at Lords.
Pakistan head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed was also asked if the players had seen the interview of Imran’s sons Kassim and Suleman with Mike Atherton.
Sarfaraz told a reporter at a media conference that the players had lunch and did not watch it.
“No, we don’t know anything about that, we were at lunch. Sarfaraz said when a reporter asked him about the news that the PCB threatened not to send the team after lunch if Sky Sports aired the interview.
There has been a sudden surge in the international media of cricketers from other countries demanding better healthcare for Imran Khan who is incarcerated in Adiala Jail.
Former teammate and captain Javed Miandad also made an impassioned plea to the authorities to release Imran, describing him as a very honest person.
A PCB source said the board were apparently not happy with the Sky Interview as it was political in nature, but due to the reception of the team on 2 September by Prince Charles and existing diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom, they avoided prolonging the issue and decided to go ahead with the series.
Pakistan lost the first Test by an innings and 103 runs. The third Test is scheduled to begin in Birmingham on September 9.
Imran, 73, has been lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since 2023 after being convicted in corruption cases.
His continued detention and reported health problems have drawn criticism from his family and several former international cricketers.
