Chelsea have signed World Cup winner Emi Martinez from Aston Villa on a three-year deal

Chelsea have bolstered their goalkeeping options with the signing of Argentina international Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa, handing the veteran shot-stopper a three-year deal, the club confirmed on Sunday.

The transfer fee was not disclosed by either club, although reports in the British media put the deal at around £7.5 million (US$10.15 million). Martinez ends an unforgettable six-year spell at Villa Parkwho joined the Midlands club from Arsenal in 2020. His departure looked increasingly likely after Villa brought in Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma earlier this month.

“I’m happy to be at this football club,” said Martinez. “Coming to Chelsea was an easy decision for me and my family and I’m over the moon – I can’t wait to get started.”

“I want to be successful here. I’m someone who wants to win in everything I do and I want to bring that to this football club because it’s a football club that wins titles so I think it’s a good match.”

“I am passionate and I play with heart. I will give 100 percent every game, every training session to make the club, my teammates and the fans proud.”

During his time at Villa, the 33-year-old made 256 appearances and developed into one of the most respected goalkeepers in English football. He was a vital part of Unai Emery’s side last season as they secured a top-four finish, earning a place in the Champions League while lifting the Europa League.

At Stamford Bridge, Martinez will battle Roberto Sanchez for the No.1 spot. Sanchez has been Chelsea’s preferred goalkeeper since his move from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023, but his position came under scrutiny again after mistakes in the Blues’ 3-2 win over Fulham in their opening game of the season.

Martinez’s reputation was also built on his success with Argentina. The goalkeeper played a major role in their World Cup triumph in 2022 and their progress to the final in 2026, while also winning the Copa America in 2021 and 2024.

His move to Chelsea adds to a string of notable departures from Aston Villa in a hectic transfer window. Morgan Rogers has made a record move to Chelsea, while Youri Tielemans has joined Manchester United. Jadon Sancho, Douglas Luiz and Lucas Digne also transferred from Villa Park.
