Kolkata Police has filed an FIR against Mamata Banerjee for violating the Calcutta High Court order

The Kolkata Police registered an FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, among others, for “violating” a Calcutta High Court order during the foundation day of the party’s student wing, the Trinamool Congress Chhattra Parishad (TMCP), held at Cathedral Road in Kolkata.

According to the police, the case was registered on August 28, 2026 in accordance with § 61 paragraph 2, 223, 125 letter a), 132 and 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case was registered on a written complaint filed by sub-inspector Apu Baidya of Hastings police station after examining the conditions laid down by the Calcutta High Court for holding Friday’s meeting at Cathedral Road.

A Calcutta police statement accused the Trinamool Congress president of committing a criminal conspiracy by provoking her supporters during the programme, which led to the crowd pushing aside barricades, clashing with police personnel “deployed to maintain law and order, creating a chaotic situation and obstructing vehicular movement on one side of Cathedral Road”.

The Calcutta High Court ordered the rally to be held from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, but the program went beyond the scheduled time. During the rally, the Trinamool Congress president was repeatedly heard saying that she would end the event by 3 pm. However, the rally dragged on past 3 pm as the former chief minister could not finish her speech.

Trinamool Congress spokesperson and Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh said the FIR was politically motivated. “We tried to finish the rally on time. But if more people turn up, it is the responsibility of the police to contain the situation,” he said.

The Kolkata police filed a similar FIR against the Trinamool Congress president for allegedly violating the Calcutta High Court order during the Shahid Dibas party rally at the same venue on July 21.
