The State Election Commission has announced the decision to hold the much-pending village committee elections in the areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). The electoral body said it will announce the voting schedule on August 31, 2026.
The election schedule and other details will be announced at a press conference by state election commissioner Pradip Kumar Chakraborty on the afternoon of August 31, a senior election official said on Saturday (29 August 2026).
The village committee elections were well ahead of schedule, tribal parties and forums demanded polls and one of them petitioned the Supreme Court.
Tipra Motha, who currently heads the TTAADC, and opposition parties have accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of deliberately delaying the election process for political considerations. Tipra Motha also highlighted the delay with the central government.
Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya had earlier said that the party would fight the village committee elections alone and not in an alliance. A very senior BJP leader recently approached the regional party for a tie-up, sources said.
Elections will be held for 587 municipal committees. The State Electoral Commission recently published draft electoral lists for municipal committees.
