HR&CE department requests devotees to help in identifying Agama temples in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE) has invited devotees to review the list of Agama temples identified by the expert committee and submit their views on any additions or corrections.

The State Government has constituted a committee vide CC dated 6.10.2025 as per directions of Supreme Court and Madras High Court in a case relating to appointment of Archakas (Priests). The Supreme Court directed that once the identification of Agamic temples is completed, vacancies in non-Agamic temples can be filled.

Out of a total of 46,341 temples, charitable trusts, special trusts, Jain temples and mutts under the jurisdiction of the department, 43,676 are temples, 45 mutts, 80 temples attached to mutts, 1,216 specific endowments, 1,301 temples3, charitable2 and charitable endowments.

A list of 34,971 temples has been drawn up by the expert committee and if devotees have any objections or additions to the list, they can do so within 30 days. The public could either appear in person at the HR&CE Commissioner’s office or upload the details on the department’s website, a press release in Chennai said.
