Four foreign women escaped from the FRRO shelter
Four foreign nationals staying at an asylum under the supervision of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) escaped from the premises in the early hours of May 11 by breaking the window bars of the facility located at Doddagubbi under Kothanur police station limits.
According to the police, the complaint was filed by Srinivas N., manager of the “Home of Hope” shelter, who said that the women escaped between 3 am and 6 am from the second floor of the building.
The shelter, which has been run by a charity since 1998, housed foreigners at the behest of FRRO authorities due to lack of space in detention centres. Currently, 22 foreign men and 18 foreign women are housed in the asylum.
The escaped women have been identified as Topista Kwikiriza and Nagawa Sheillah alias Tibiwa Irena from Uganda, Safina Nakanyike from Uganda and Fitina Nzeyimana from Burundi.
Police said the women were earlier detained by various police stations and FRRO officials for overstaying in India and allegedly involved in illegal activities. They were later moved to a shelter for temporary accommodation.
The complainant said that the staff searched for the women after discovering the escape, but failed to trace their whereabouts, following which a police complaint was lodged.
Based on the complaint, the Kothanur police registered a case under Sections 20 and 23 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 for violation of FRRO and illegal stay in the country.
