US-Iran News LIVE: Trump confirms ‘largely negotiated’ peace deal with Tehran, says ‘Strait of Hormuz will be open’ | Today’s news
US-Iran News LIVE: US President Donald Trump announced a major advance in the Iran peace deal on Saturday, confirming that the deal will reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which one-fifth of the world’s oil exports pass.
In a social media post on Truth Social, Donald Trump indicated that Washington had “largely negotiated” a memorandum of understanding with Tehran in coordination with the Gulf states, saying: “I had a call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu of Israel, which also went very well. The final aspects and details of the agreement are currently being discussed and will be announced soon.”
The development comes after weeks of negotiations since the April 8 ceasefire. Trump hinted at the possibility of a permanent deal and did not say what else the peace deal would include. As the world grapples with an energy crisis due to the blockade of the Persian Gulf, he added: “In addition to many other elements of the agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened.”
Since the start of the US-Iran war on February 28, oil prices have been extremely volatile and constantly under upward pressure due to uncertainty.
But Iran’s Fars news agency said early Sunday that Trump’s claim about the strait was “contrary to reality.” She further noted that the deal will allow Tehran to manage a critical waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
After top Iranian officials met with Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir, Tehran said on Saturday it was working on a memorandum of understanding to end the war. A Pakistani official visited Iran as part of ongoing mediation efforts. Two Pakistani sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that the talks said the deal being negotiated was “fairly comprehensive to end the war”, while Pakistan’s military said the talks had led to “encouraging” progress.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a post on X, praised Trump for his “extraordinary efforts for peace.
