‘Test cricket needs character’: Gautam Gambhir’s message after India’s draw against Sri Lanka in Colombo
India head coach Gautam Gambhir praised his team for showing the character and mental strength required in Test cricket after Shubman Gill’s side secured a 1-0 series win over Sri Lanka. India had a chance to complete a 2-0 draw after winning the series opener in Galle, but Sri Lanka mounted a spirited fightback in Colombo to force a draw despite being asked to continue.
Gambhir praises India, singles out Dinus
After the series ended, Gambhir took to social media to praise India’s performance while highlighting the impact of Sri Lankan batsman Sonal Dinusha.“Test cricket needs character, patience and mental toughness which our boys showed! Special thanks to Sonal Dinusha for his outstanding performance,” Gambhir wrote on X.Dinusha was a central figure in the Sri Lankan resistance. He scored centuries in both innings of the Colombo Test, including an unbeaten 133 in the second innings, which thwarted India’s efforts to finish the match.
Padikkal, Jurel power of India at 503
India got off to a dominant start after opting to bat first in Colombo. Devdutt Padikkal led the charge with a brilliant 117 while Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 115. Rishabh Pant added 63 and captain Gill contributed 50 as India amassed 503/9 before declaring. Asitha Fernando was Sri Lanka’s top bowler as she finished with four wickets.Sri Lanka were dismissed for 290 in their first innings but Dinusha stood out again with a composed 103. Pasindu Sooriyabandara also played an important role scoring 80 while India’s Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar took three wickets each. When they were asked to continue, Sri Lanka were in serious trouble at 218/6 and India looked set for another victory. However, Dinusha refused to give India an opening.
The 112 course rack is a game changer
Dinusha joined forces with Keshara Nuwantha to form a crucial partnership of 112 runs. Nuwantha’s 46 came from 150 deliveries as the pair absorbed the pressure and consumed valuable overs. Sri Lanka’s lower order then provided further support, allowing Dinush to remain at the crease till the end.He finished unbeaten on 133 off 264 balls, with eight fours and two sixes, as Sri Lanka posted 429/9 to secure a draw. The result ended India’s hopes of a clean sheet but gave them a 1–0 series win.India built up a series lead in the opening Test at Galle, securing a 165-run victory. Manav Suthar was the star of the competition, claiming his first 10-wicket haul in Test cricket, while Padikkal played a key role with 167 in India’s first innings.
