Almost 100 minimally invasive heart surgeries at HCG Suchirayu Hospital

HCG Suchirayu Hospital in Hubballi has performed nearly 100 Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) procedures, providing advanced cardiac care in North Karnataka.

At a press conference in Hubballi on Thursday, HCG Suchirayu Hospital’s chief consultant, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon Sharan Hallad said MICS represents an important advance in cardiac surgery with smaller incisions that help reduce tissue damage, blood loss and scarring.

“MICS can be used for a variety of procedures, including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement, correction of selected congenital heart defects, and heart tumor removal. In appropriately selected patients, minimally invasive approaches can facilitate faster recovery and earlier return to routine activities,” said Dr. Hallad.

He emphasized that not every patient will be a candidate for MICS. A patient’s age, general health, disease severity, and cardiac anatomy are among the factors the surgical team evaluates before deciding on a procedure.

In response to a query, he said that the first MICS was done in Hubballi in 2019 and in subsequent years, the frequency of MICS in the hospital has increased and the success rate is up to 99%.

Potential benefits of MICS include shorter hospital stays, reduced scarring and faster recovery, he added.

Consultant anesthesiologist Vishwanath said anesthesia and perioperative management are critical to the success of minimally invasive cardiac procedures.

“Specialized anesthetic techniques, continuous monitoring, effective pain management and early extubation can help patients recover faster and shorten ICU stays,” he added.
