More than 4,500 emergency workers were deployed on the scene, working almost 59 hours after the tragedy to look for survivors, restore bodies and help families. A total of 189 people were rescued from debris, while 17 people still remain hospitalized, the National Health Service said.
The Emergency Operational Center (COE) stated that the venue was on full capacity, although the exact number of participants and the cause of the collapse remains investigated. “This is the hardest task I had in 20 years of COE management,” said Juan Manuel Mendez, head of the emergency operational center Juan Manuel on Thursday.
As families continue to mourn over their loved ones, the National Institute of Forensic Pathology is still working to identify the victims and return of relatives.
The collapse occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday at the Jet Set night club during the crowded concert of Merengue singer Rubby Perez, who was among those killed. The former baseball pitcher Major League Octavio Totel, 51, who made his debut for the New York Mets in 1999 and played until 2013 for more than a dozen teams, was also declared dead, the authorities said. Other victims included Nelsy Cruz, the Governor of the Montecristi province and the Major League Nelson Cruz, Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed sadness on Wednesday and said there was at least one US citizen among the victims. “Our hearts go to families and close affected by this devastating event,” he said on the X.
Pope Francis also sent condolences.
Local sites with media and tickets suggest that the club could hold between 700 and 1,000 people.
With regard to the catastrophic incident, three days of sadness were announced. President Luis Abinader is scheduled to participate in the Commemorative Mass in the Polidportivo de Haine sports center this Sunday, the last day of the national period of sadness.
