Task force set up to provide relief to the people of Sikkim affected by the floods in Nepal: Official

The Sikkim government has set up a task force to provide relief and essential assistance to those from the state who may be stranded or missing in the flash floods in Nepal, an official said on Friday (28 Aug 2026).

The task force, chaired by Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority Director Prabhakar Rai, will coordinate with the Centre, the Indian Embassy in Nepal and several other agencies to get information about the disaster-affected residents of the state, he said.

“It will collect, collate and verify information on persons who have been reported missing, stranded, injured, deceased or otherwise affected by the incident,” the official said, referring to Thursday’s (Aug 27) announcement.

The task force will establish communication with the families of the affected residents of Sikkim and facilitate exchange of verified information about their condition and whereabouts, he said.

The death toll from flash floods in central Nepal rose to 469 on Friday (28 August), with more bodies recovered. So far, 1545 injured and stranded people have been rescued from various affected regions. Of these, 84 are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals in Kathmandu.

Search and rescue operations continued for the third day since the tragic incident with the mobilization of 7,451 security personnel, including 2,391 members of the Nepalese army, Nepalese police said.

An avalanche of ice rocks triggered by a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border sent a torrent of water, mud and debris downstream across central Nepal on Wednesday (Aug 26), devastating towns and villages, washing away homes, vehicles, roads and bridges and damaging hydropower projects.
