APTF threatens to protest from September 2 over TET

The Andhra Pradesh Teachers Federation (APTF) has demanded that in-service teachers be exempted from the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). The federation also urged the government to conduct the exam in offline mode with a pass mark of 40% as part of the special TET notification issued for additional teachers.

Federation president Chennupati Manjula and general secretary K. Basavalinga Rao told an emergency meeting of the APTF state sub-committee convened on Thursday that if the government did not meet their demands by September 1, they would be forced to take the path of confrontation and stage a protest outside Vidya Bhavan from September 2 to 11.

APTF leaders said that the Supreme Court had directed that teachers with several years of service and experience should re-qualify in TET. They alleged that both the central and state governments have failed to amend relevant laws to protect teachers in employment.

Instead of exempting senior teachers from TET or issuing a special notification with a 40% pass rate and an offline exam, the government issued the notification as per the existing procedure, which APTF leaders termed as an attack on teachers.

The leaders said their four main demands include exemption from TET for in-service senior teachers as was the case in some other states, reduction of qualifying percentage in special TET to 40%, subject-specific TET i.e. teachers teaching mathematics and science (BS and PS) should be required to take TET in their respective subjects only and considering the age of senior teachers, TET should be conducted offline.
